How It Works

Automated microneedling creates controlled micro-injuries to the skin, which stimulate production of collagen and elastin. When the skin repairs itself, it creates a thicker epidermis, which improves the look of fine lines, wrinkles, and scars.

Candidates for Microneedling

The treatment is minimally invasive and doesn't cause significant wounding of the skin, so most people can safely undergo treatment, regardless of age or skin type. Anyone who is unhappy with the appearance of the skin on the face, neck, décolleté, arms, hands, legs, abdomen, or back may be a good candidate for microneedling.

Microneedling Treatment

We use a sterile cartridge with 12 micro-points attached to the Eclipse MicroPen Elite for the treatment. The settings of the MicroPen tool can be adjusted to suit your specific needs. First, we apply sterile saline solution to your skin. Then, in a single motion, the pen will be gently pressed against the skin while gliding in one direction. We repeat the process until the entire treatment area has been covered. Many patients describe the sensation as feeling like sandpaper being moved across the skin.

The entire treatment lasts only about 15 to 30 minutes depending on the size of the treatment area. Your skin will look red at first, but this will resolve within a couple of days.

Some patients only require treatment once a year. However, we recommend that patients receive a series of 2 to 3 treatments spaced out about 6 to 8 weeks apart. During consultation, we will assess your skin and give you a more precise estimate of how many treatments you will need.

Patients will notice an immediate "glow" after treatment. Visible improvements to the skin will develop over the course of several weeks. You will notice reduction in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, improved skin tone and texture, and overall younger looking skin. Results can continue to improve up to 6 months after your treatment.

Answers to Your Questions About Microneedling

Can I get microneedling treatment if I have BOTOX® or dermal fillers?

Yes, we recommend scheduling your microneedling appointment just before your BOTOX or dermal filler appointment. If you had an injection recently, you must wait 48 hours after having BOTOX, and one week after filler injection.

What should I know about aftercare?

Patients typically experience redness for 2 to 4 days, but some people heal completely in 24 hours. Glycolic acid, retinols, and other acidic substances should not be used for 2 to 3 days after treatment. It is also important to avoid sun exposure and wear sunscreen for the first few days.

Is there a risk of infection?

Infections after treatment are very unlikely. The tiny wounds close quickly, and the treatment is done under clinical conditions with a sterile tip. It is important to seek treatment from a board-certified dermatologist to ensure safety during treatment.
