How It Works

BOTOX Cosmetic contains a diluted, purified form of botulinum toxin that is a potent muscle relaxant. By injecting extremely small doses into specific facial muscles, the action of only those muscles is relaxed. Without the repeated creasing from muscle contractions, the overlying skin smooths out. Untreated facial muscles continue to create natural facial expressions.

Candidates for BOTOX

BOTOX treatments help women and men smooth out dynamic wrinkles, which are caused by facial muscle contractions. Commonly treated concerns include:

  • Worry lines across the forehead
  • Vertical frown lines between the eyebrows
  • Crow's feet around the outer corners of the eyes

During your cosmetic consultation with one of our skin specialists, you will be asked to describe the improvements you'd like to see. Your skin and facial anatomy will be carefully examined. If we determine BOTOX is a good fit for you, you can have the treatment during the same appointment. To minimize bruising, we recommend you don't take substances such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and vitamin E for a week before treatment. It also helps to stay away from alcoholic drinks the day before and after your treatment.

BOTOX Treatments

We perform BOTOX treatments right in our office. After cleansing your face, a topical anesthetic is applied to the treated area to minimize any discomfort. Next, a very tiny micro-needle is used to inject a small amount of BOTOX into various sites on the face. Treatments typically are complete in under 15 minutes. Afterwards, you are free to return to work and other daily activities.

While BOTOX results aren't instant, treated areas will gradually smooth out within about 4 to 7 days. The benefit of this delayed response is that your rejuvenated look won't be obvious; the treated lines and wrinkles gradually fade for about 10 days. Keep in mind that patient experiences vary.

Answers to Your Questions About BOTOX Cosmetic

Are BOTOX treatments safe?

BOTOX injections have been safely used by thousands of patients over the last 20 years. BOTOX Cosmetic is produced in a controlled laboratory and given in extremely small doses. Although it is a toxin, it is safe when administered by a trained medical professional. The most common minor complication is a slight and very temporary drooping of the eyelid resulting from BOTOX injections. Patients can immediately resume full activity after their BOTOX treatment.

How much does BOTOX cost?

The cost for a BOTOX treatment in Ann Arbor depends on the areas being treated, whether you've had prior BOTOX treatments in the areas you want to target, and other factors. Although price is a necessary consideration, be aware that your safety and the quality of your results depend on the training and experience of the injector. Our doctors specialize in cosmetic dermatology and understand where and how much BOTOX to inject for optimal results. During your cosmetic consultation, you will be given a treatment cost personalized for you. Taking advantage of the Brilliant Distinctions® program and our specials can make these treatments even more affordable.

Do I need BOTOX or a dermal filler?

BOTOX treats certain types of wrinkles by temporarily addressing their cause. Dermal fillers such as JUVÉDERM® are temporary as well, but smooth wrinkles and folds by adding volume underneath the skin. Fillers can also add fullness and shape the lips, cheeks, and other areas.

For enhanced facial rejuvenation, we may recommend a combination of BOTOX and dermal filler treatments. Because these treatments address different concerns and areas of the face, performing them together can provide a more youthful look than either on its own. We also recommend combining these injectable treatments with microneedling for a more complete facial rejuvenation.

How long do results from BOTOX last?

BOTOX Cosmetic results typically last 3 to 4 months, depending on the number of previous treatments. A memory response may develop with repeated BOTOX injections if they are done every 3 months for approximately 1 year. So although the effects are not permanent, there may be a gradual lengthening of the interval between treatments. Some people who visit our practice for laser hair removal from Detroit and surrounding areas combine it with a BOTOX treatment while they're here.

Clearing Up Misconceptions About BOTOX Cosmetic

Despite its popularity and widespread use, there is still a lot of misinformation circulating about BOTOX. BOTOX Cosmetic does NOT:

  • "Freeze" your face or limit facial expressions
  • Rejuvenate aging, sagging skin
  • Act as a dermal filler like JUVÉDERM® Injectable Gel or Restylane®
