Acne Treatment at Our Centers

Most of us are familiar with acne – that unpleasant skin condition characterized by blackheads, whiteheads, and inflamed pimples or cysts. About 3 out of 4 teenagers will experience acne to some extent, but it can occur at any age, from infancy through adulthood. It can cause both physical and emotional discomfort and scarring. At our acne treatment centers in the metro-Detroit and Ann Arbor area, we specialize in effective medical treatment of acne so that you can look better and feel more comfortable in your skin.

Causes and Characteristics

Acne is typically caused by a combination of blocked pores and excess oil. When the glands produce too much oil – often triggered by hormonal changes – this excess oil combines with bacteria, dirt, dead skin cells and debris to clog the pores and cause acne lesions. The result can range from blackheads and whiteheads to severely inflamed pimples and cysts. Acne is most common on the face, but also occurs on the back, chest, and buttocks. Acne does not appear to be related to diet, but it can be aggravated by certain medications, stress, perspiration, and makeup and hair products. Uncontrolled acne can result in permanent scarring and discoloration that can be difficult to conceal.

Treatment

If over the counter products do not clear up their acne within a few weeks, we recommend an appointment with our dermatologist for Detroit and Ann Arbor area residents. Acne treatment options are more effective than ever before, and there is no good reason to suffer the discomfort of this highly treatable condition. Some options include:

  • Prescription formulas of benzoyl peroxide, sulfur, resorcinol, or salicylic acid
  • Oral antibiotics such as minocycline, doxycycline, and tetracycline
  • Topical antibiotics such as clindamycin or erythromycin
  • Retinoic acid cream or gel (Retin-A) and isotretinoin pills (Accutane)

We also offer chemical peels which can help with active acne as well as scarring. In some cases, acne scars can be improved with dermal fillers, which can raise indentations for a smoother appearance. Feel free to ask about Ann Arbor laser hair removal and our many other cosmetic services, as well.
